Papers and photographs, 1861-1864.

Papers and photographs concerning Asahel Gage, a private in Company D of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment (an Iron Brigade unit) during the Civil War who was killed in action. The collection contains a diary, three letters, one photograph, and assorted papers relating to Gage, a Janesville native. In one and two-word phrases, Gage's diary describes the weather and activities that he encountered as a member of the 2nd Wisconsin during 1862. It includes an entry for September 14, 1862 that was written mere hours before Gage was killed during the battle of South Mountain. There is one letter (1861) to his brother that describes his regiment's preparations for war. Another letter from Sergeant A.F. Lee to Mr. E. Gage (Asahel's brother) describes Gage's death on the battlefield. The third letter (1864) was written by Gage's sister, Achsah, to one of her brothers and she discusses Lincoln's chances for re-election and the draft in Beloit. The assorted papers include two handwritten copies of Gage's army death certificate and a photocopy of his army casualty sheet. The photograph is a small oval bust view of Gage in his army uniform.
